Types of flexible packaging converting machines

Printing machines : These machines apply ink onto the flexible film to create the final printed design.

  • Flexographic printing machines: Ideal for high-speed, long-run jobs, flexo printing is a versatile and cost-effective  process for applying ink to a wide variety of substrates.
  • Rotogravure printing machines: Used for large-volume, high-quality printing, rotogravure machines can produce consistent, high-end graphics on flexible packaging.
  • Digital printing machines: This ink-jet based method is fast and flexible, ideal for short-run,variable-data printing
    and complex graphics.

Laminating and coating machines :These machines bond multiple layers of flexible materials to create composite films with enhanced
barrier properties for moisture, oxygen, and light.

  • Extrusion laminators: A common method for combining different layers of film.
  • Solvent/water-based laminators: These machines use adhesive applied in a solvent or water base to laminate materials.
  • Solventless laminators: These use adhesives that do not require solvents, offering an eco- friendly option.

Slitting and rewinding machines : Slitter-rewinders are used to cut large rolls of printed and laminated material into smaller, narrower finished rolls with precise and consistent edges.

  • Product example: HSI-1300 High Speed Slitting Machine, according to Runhai Machine.

Pouch and bag-making machines: These machines take the finished film rolls and convert them into the final flexible packaging, such
as pouches, bags, and sachets.

  • Vertical Form-Fill-Seal (VFFS) machines: These create, fill, and seal pouches in a vertical process, typically for products like snacks, powders, and grains.
  • Horizontal Form-Fill-Seal (HFFS) machines: These systems package products horizontally and are often used for flow-wrapping and packaging items like pouches and sachets.
  • Doypack machines: Shemesh Automation offers all-in-one monoblock flexible packaging machines like the CITADEL and ENCORE for filling, sealing, and capping products in pouches and doypacks.

Key factors for selection

  • Process requirements: Consider whether you need a single machine or a complete line for printing, laminating, and converting.
  • Materials: Ensure the machine is compatible with your chosen substrates, such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyester (PET), or laminated foils.
  • Production volume: For high volumes, flexographic or rotogravure printing is most cost- effective. For smaller, customized batches, digital printing may be better.
  • Packaging format: The end-product (e.g., pillow bag, stand-up pouch, sachet) will determine the type of bag or pouch-making machine needed.
  • Budget: Used equipment from suppliers like Galred offers a cost-effective alternative to new machines.
